The cathedral of Notre-Dame des Doms is one of the most important monuments in Avignon and a remarkable example of the religious and medieval heritage in the city. Located on the Rocher des Doms the cathedral has dominated the city skyline for centuries.
Built mainly during the 12th century Notre-Dame des Doms has undergone numerous transformations throughout its history. Its impressive architecture combines Romanesque elements with later additions reflecting the different periods that shaped Avignon.
The cathedral is particularly famous for its magnificent golden statue of the Virgin Mary which stands at the top of the bell tower and can be seen from many points across the city.
Inside visitors can discover a rich collection of religious artworks and historical treasures including two tombs of Popes. The cathedral also has a special connection to the Avignon Papacy when Avignon became the residence of the popes during the 14th century.
