Visit Carpentras

Carpentras is one of the most historically rich and culturally distinctive destinations in Provence. Located at the foot of Mont Ventoux this charming Provençal town is renowned for its remarkable architectural heritage and lively traditional markets. Carpentras offers visitors a wonderful glimpse into the traditions and history of Provence away from the more widely known hilltop villages of the Luberon.

Carpentras is particularly famous for its impressive historical centre which reflects centuries of Roman and Provençal influences. One of its most remarkable landmarks is the Cathédrale Saint-Siffrein : a magnificent Gothic cathedral built primarily during the 15th and 16th centuries. Its imposing façade and historic religious treasures make it the most important monument in town. Nearby visitors can discover a surviving medieval gateway that once formed part of the fortifications.

Beyond its architectural heritage Carpentras is renowned for its traditional Provençal market held every Friday morning. It is an excellent opportunity to discover the flavours of Provence and experience the lively social atmosphere of the town. Carpentras is particularly famous for its berlingots : colourful striped hard candies that have been produced locally for centuries.

Carpentras also has a fascinating cultural and historical identity shaped by its past as an important centre of the Jewish community in Provence. The synagogue dating from the 14th century and later modified is recognised as one of the oldest active synagogues in France. Its historic interior and distinctive architecture provide a valuable insight into the history of Jewish life in the region and the cultural diversity that has contributed to heritage over the centuries.

Carpentras is also an ideal base for exploring the wider region. The nearby Mont Ventoux dominates the horizon offering spectacular scenery and opportunities for hiking and cycling. The surrounding countryside is famous for its vineyards and truffle production while neighbouring villages and wine-growing areas invite visitors to explore the culinary traditions and rural heritage.

Carpentras is an excellent destination for travellers wishing to discover a more authentic side of Provence.
