The Roman theatre of Arles

The Roman Theatre of Arles is one of the most impressive ancient monuments in Provence and a must-see for anyone exploring the historic city of Arles. Built at the end of the 1st century BC during the reign of Emperor Augustus the theatre reflects the importance and cultural influence of the ancient Roman city of Arelate.

Designed to accommodate thousands of spectators the theatre played an important role in the social and cultural life of the city. It was a popular venue for dramatic performances and public entertainment bringing together people from all levels of Roman society.

Although only part of the original structure survives visitors can still appreciate several remarkable features : the semicircular seating area, the orchestra, and the remains of the ancient stage. Two imposing columns from the original stage building have also survived and have become among the most recognizable features of the monument.

Throughout the centuries the Roman theatre underwent significant changes. Parts of the structure were dismantled and some of its stones were reused in other buildings. Archaeological excavations and restoration campaigns have gradually revealed the original scale and importance of the theatre.

Today the Roman theatre remains a lively cultural venue. Performances and events are regularly held here particularly during the summer months. Its ancient architecture creates a spectacular backdrop where the history of Roman Arles meets contemporary culture.

A visit to the Roman Theatre of Arles offers a fascinating glimpse into the Roman past and provides a unique opportunity to discover how entertainment and everyday life were intertwined in ancient Provence.
