Arles holds a special place in the history of Vincent van Gogh. The Dutch artist arrived in the city in February 1888 searching for the intense light and landscapes of the South of France. During his stay of just over a year Arles became one of the most productive and transformative periods of his career.

The strong Provençal sunlight profoundly influenced his use of brilliant colors helping shape the distinctive style for which he is now celebrated.

Their collaboration in Arles was intense but short-lived and their time together would become one of the most famous episodes in modern art history.

Another important site is the Rhône riverfront where he painted Starry Night capturing the reflections of gas lamps and stars on the water.

Van Gogh relationship with Arles was not always peaceful. His mental health deteriorated during the later part of his stay culminating in the well-known crisis involving Gauguin in December 1888.
